Rough House Produces Corning's AMAZINGLY POPULAR Vision Video

February, 2011 Rough House created a promotional video that has quickly become a worldwide viral sensation. A Day Made of Glass was produced by Rough House in collaboration with Westernized Productions for Corning. The video shows technologies evolving with Corning's specialized glass products in everyday life in the near future.

A Day Made of Glass, Made Possible by Corning was introduced on Corning's homepage and YouTube channel where it's had millions of views. The video is featured on hundreds of blogs, tech sites and investment pages including Wired, Current, Gizmodo, Open Salon and Atlantic Wire, reaching Number One Video on Unruly Media's Viral Video Chart. Marketing Daily called it "The most-watched corporate video of all time."

Dave Mackie directed the project for San Francisco ad agency Doremus. Rough House Executive Producer Todd Lindo led the production & post teams, including: Marcello Grande - VFX Supervisor, Lisa Tesone - Live Action Producer, Norman Bonney - Director of Photography, Sterling Storm - Production Designer, and Marc Cebrian - Editor. For Doremus, San Francisco: Michael Litchfield - VP/Creative Director, Interactive Media and Catherine Hunter - Agency Producer.

Six days of production for A Day Made of Glass took the cast and crew of 45 to locations in Marin County, San Jose, and San Francisco. Post production was completed at the 550 Bryant Street studio with artists from Rough House and Westernized using After Effects, Nuke, Maya, Final Cut, and numerous 3D tracking tools. E.P. Todd Lindo noted, "The live action production was definitely a challenge, but creating all the elements of technology that don't quite exist yet, that was the real fun. Fortunately, we have a lot of artist firepower here at 550."

With over 10 million views and counting, the five and a half minute movie is a YouTube phenom! Favorite comment posted so far: This is a lot better than Hellmann's "A Day Made of Mayonnaise" video.

550 Bryant San Francisco

Rough House Plans Move to SOMA in 2010

November, 2009   Rough House has announced a move to 550 Bryant Street in
San Francisco’s South of Market district in May, 2010. Rough House will be joining Elastic Creative, Westernized Productions, Sirius Sound, Milomix, Fullframe, and several other production-related companies in the historic building. 550 is located between Third and Fourth Streets, and was once the home of post house SFPG.

“After ten years in the Presidio, we have decided to take advantage of opportunities at this new location to work as part of a larger production and post community,” said Rough House partner Michael Pickman-Thoon. “The S.F. Film Centre was designed to be that, but in reality that is no longer happening, especially with the demise of The Orphanage.“

“We began thinking about this last year after getting to know Drew Fiero, principal of Elastic,” explained Roger Krakow, founder & partner of Rough House. “Our two companies compliment each other extremely well and we hope to be able to combine forces in order to service a broader range of clients.”

Rough House Executive Producer Todd Lindo agreed, “We are looking forward to the new space and being able to work more closely with the teams already there. We have already moved our Flame to the new location and have partnered on a number of interesting projects.”

“We’re also excited about building upgrades at 550 Bryant,” added Krakow. “New skylights have been added to bring more daylight into the common area and there are many more projects on the drawing board to give the space a more modern feel.”

Rough House editors, artists and producers will become an integral part of the creative mix at the new 550. “We have already established a great working relationship, and we look forward to having it all under one roof to best service all of our clients,” said Pickman-Thoon.

“I love working with musicians and filming the bands,” said director Pahati. “We shoot an entire set, and then choose the three songs that are most indicative of the band’s style.”

Producer Berberich added, “The musicians love getting the exposure, it’s a great way for indie artists to show their stuff. And the site keeps getting more hits every month.”

Around the World

“Our work is intimately tied to our social responsibility. We connect the harvest to the home… and our investments in people are aimed at enhancing our ability to serve this vital purpose.”

-Pat Woertz, Chairman, CEO and President, ADM

October, 2009   Rough House’s Michael Pickman-Thoon edited an international corporate responsibility video for the Archer Daniels Midland Company shot in Africa, South America and the US, directed by David Rathod and Bill Tunnicliffe. The four-part mini documentary highlights programs ADM undertakes around the world to be a leading corporate citizen. The film was presented at an event in New York honoring ADM’s Pat Woertz.

“It was such a pleasure editing HD footage from around the world,” commented Pickman-Thoon. “The stories were inspiring, from cleaning up the Mississippi River to improving farming practices in Ivory Coast, preserving the Amazon rain forest in Brazil, and promoting motorcycle safety in Paraguay.”

Kit Makes More Movie Magic

"Watching Independent Lens… is like going into an independent bookstore—you don't always find what you were looking for but you often find something you didn't even know you wanted."
-The New Yorker

September, 2009   Senior artist Kit Klangsin always has plenty of fresh ideas and some tricks up his sleeve to create dynamic, original motion graphics for Rough House projects ranging from broadcast to corporate to features.

Kit just completed his second season on the Emmy award winning PBS series Independent Lens. Working with producers from ITVS and Rough House Producer Ian Matzen, Kit designed the show's on-air promo package. Promos for all 27 episodes were cut by a group of editors, and Kit's design brought them all together with the animated series logo, show title, and optical effects. Kit applied the show’s identity to promotional content, both online and on-air.

Kit recently created motion graphics on a wide range of projects including Cisco, Polycom, McAfee, Anderson DDB, Microsoft Xbox Live, Scherling-Plough and Blue Shield. Kit developed mind-blowing animated sequences for the feature "Everything Must Go" directed by Len Dell’Amico.

Kit collaborated with director/editor Ian McCamey on a spec spot for Facebook Mobile, which was named Studio Daily's Video of the Day. It can be viewed at:

Finishing an Independent Doc: Under Our Skin

"Heart-rending... inflammatory." - Stephen Holden, New York Times

"Stirs the deepest emotions and reveals the most unsettling truth."

- Justin Berton, San Francisco Chronicle

August, 2009   Rough House provided finishing, color correction, and complete DVD authoring for Andy Abrahams Wilson's award-winning documentary, Under Our Skin. A gripping tale of microbes, medicine and money Under Our Skin exposes the hidden story of Lyme disease. Working with Producer Renny McCauley over a two year period, Rough House editor Marc Cebrian prepped the film for various releases and mastered the SD material into a final HD deliverable. The entire Rough House DVD team created the menus, navigation, and compression for the commercial release.

Under Our Skin premiered at the TriBeca film festival where it won an Audience Choice Award. It has won Best Documentary at the Houston Film Festival and five other festivals. It is currently screening nationally and was released on DVD in September. The trailer can be viewed at:
